I’m looking for excellent writers who want to contribute reporting to Newcomer, either through individual stories about venture capital and startups or a recurring engagement helping us produce data-focused posts.

Freelance Stories: $1,200 for 1,000 words

We’re interested in pieces about the business of Silicon Valley. We want deep dives into the financial performance of high-profile venture capital firms or high-flying startup unicorns. We want to track the Silicon Valley investor psyche. What is the mood of the private markets? We love profiles of behind the scenes investors and are obsessed with top tier venture firms. Stories with financial scoops are winners! Compelling writing is a must. Magazine writers encouraged to pitch.

We want someone to help us create posts like this one on a monthly basis. We’ll help get you access to data sources and contacts for you to work with so you can aggregate data for ten charts. You’ll help weave the charts into a compelling narrative.

About Newcomer:

Newcomer is where technology and venture capital intersect: A deeply reported newsletter on the inner workings of the startup industry written by Eric Newcomer.

I was the first employee at The Information. Then for nearly six years, I worked at Bloomberg, scooping IPO news, acquisitions, and financing rounds. I tend to be a contrarian, which meant for many years I was skeptical of Silicon Valley. However, press coverage of the Valley had gotten so overwhelmingly negative that I saw room for some contrarian optimism.

That’s why, in October 2021 in the midst of the pandemic, I decided to quit my job at Bloomberg and go solo with Newcomer.

In two years, the newsletter has amassed more than 60,000 total readers and more than 2,000 paying subscribers. Partners at top VC firms and executives at major tech companies pay for premium subscriptions to Newcomer. It’s become a top revenue-generating tech newsletter on Substack. I’ve published lively interviews with tech luminaries including Reid Hoffman, Kirsten Green, Dara Khosrowshahi, Chamath Palihapitiya, Bill Gurley, Keith Rabois, and Laurence Tosi.

Recently, we’ve started expanding into digital media and events. Earlier this year, we launched the Newcomer podcast. In March, we held our first event, the Cerebral Valley AI Summit, and are planning more events down the line.
